A dysplasia consultation is a special medical facility that deals with abnormal tissue changes in various areas of the female genital tract. These changes can be discovered through the cancer screening smear test or can be noticed through visible signs such as color changes or keratinization. A precise diagnosis is made in the dysplasia consultation if such abnormalities are present, even if there are no visible changes but there are subjective complaints.
What is done in a dysplasia consultation?
The procedure in the dysplasia consultation is similar to a normal gynecological examination. A special microscope, the colposcope, is used to look closely at the affected areas. By using different solutions, changes can be made more visible. To confirm the diagnosis, a tissue sample is usually taken, which is normally not painful. You can follow the entire examination process on a monitor. Based on the results and in consultation with your gynecologist, a decision will be made as to whether treatment is necessary and what form it should take.
Is there anything I need to bear in mind when I come to the dysplasia consultation?
No special preparation for the procedure is required and menstruation is not a problem.
What does a dysplasia consultation cost?
The costs of the procedure are fully covered by your health insurance.
Do I need to bring anything to the dysplasia consultation?
For the first appointment, you should bring any previous findings such as smear test results or reports on previous operations in the genital area. You can usually obtain these from your gynecologist. It is also helpful to bring your allergy pass, heart pass, emergency pass and, in the case of pregnancy, your maternity pass.
To be brought along, if available:
Preliminary findings (smear results, reports on past operations)
Allergy passport
Heart passport
Emergency card
In case of pregnancy: pregnancy passport
Health insurance card
